The Palmies started out just a few years ago as a simple Island Community Theatre awards presentation to recoginize excellence both on stage and backstage. Usually we handed out our Palmie Awards at a rented conference room or at somebody's home, and preferably the home of somebody we knew.
Today, as Island Community Theatre experiences phenomenal growth, the Palmie Awards are a huge production, essentialy a produced show. The Palmies attract hundreds of Tampa Bay theatre people for the food, the music, the giant video screen, and, of course, the Palmie Awards.
Palmie Award winners go on to compete as Island Community Theatre nominees for The Lary Award, the Tampa Bay equivalent of the Tony, on October 5th, 2008 at the Largo Cultural Center.
